LAUGHING CACTUS PUPPET FESTIVAL WORKSHOPS
“Puppets Talk, People Listen”

Puppetry in the Classroom
This class will provide you with the basic elements to implement puppetry in a classroom setting or any setting where you teach and interact with children.

You’ll be taught how to use puppetry to teach, introduce new concepts, help with the writing process, spice up your story times,…in fact the possibilities are endless.

How many times have we, as teachers, wished we had and extra hand or two? Well, with puppetry you have extra help, right on the end of your hand.

In this class we will show simple ways to incorporate the use of puppetry in a classroom setting. We will teach how to manipulate and create simple easy puppets and how to use those puppets in the classroom.

The First part of the class will introduce puppet theory and creative uses.
• How to manipulate puppets
• What kinds of voices to use
• Do you need to use a voice at all
• Simple ways to enrich and liven up your lesson plans
• The do’s and don’t’s of puppetry
• And how to ‘ease’ into puppetry
• How can puppets help with creative writing and reports

The second part of the class each participant will construct their own puppet from simple stuffed toys. A simple and inexpensive way to up your puppet population in the classroom. Patterns will also be given to help those who what to go above and beyond the basics. This will make it easier to jump right into the world of puppetry.

From Pre-school and beyond, puppetry will add excitement and fun in your teaching.

Wanna-Be Puppets (make & take)
Do you want a nice puppet but don’t have the time nor creative mind to make one? Or maybe you are creative but want another source for puppet making. How many stuffed animals do you have laying around the house doing nothing? Turn them into puppets! Learn how to turn stuffed animals into hand puppet, rod puppets, or marionettes.

Rod Puppets (make & take)
This class is an excellent introduction to the fun art of puppetry! Rod puppets are versatile figures traditionally controlled from below by rods. Students will learn to create and manipulate their own unique rod puppet characters using everyday and recycled materials with easy techniques. Everyone leaves with a puppet!

Puppet Making for Children (make & take)
Send your youngsters to Puppet School for a crafty class filled with fun and puppets! In this 2-hour workshop, the kids will go step-by-step, tracing, cutting, hot gluing (with very low temperature glue guns), and decorating their own puppets, all under the supervision of our talented and friendly builders. Parents/ Teachers are invited to the last 30 minutes to watch your kiddies perform with their new friends. Designed for kids ages 8 to 15 years old.

Music for Puppet Theatre
As a music participant you will find out how to tell their story with music. You will be challenged with evoking the mood of scenes and characters from multiple pieces, ranging from playful to dark and haunted themes. What music is legal to use in a performance? Tricks to help enhance the play.

Theatrical Puppetry
The use of puppets in theatre dates back as far as theatre itself. Currently, it’s experiencing a resurgence in our culture, from Disney’s stage version of The Lion King to Tony Award-winning War Horse to everybody’s favourite naughty puppets Avenue Q. Theatrical puppeteers are dynamic, with the ability to both step into the spotlight along side their puppet and disappear into the scenery while letting the puppet tell the story.

Writing for Puppet Theatre
Play writing, especially where puppets are involved, is not an easy task. Nor should it be. A play is a delicately constructed world, newly born. We will attempt to understand what it is that makes drama effective and affecting. We will attempt to apply this new knowledge into the creation of live performance with puppets. This class is appropriate for those who are looking to develop existing stories. Those puppeteers looking to investigate Play writing for the first time will find this a welcoming and productive introduction, as will those playwrights looking to incorporate the use of puppets in their drama.

Simple Puppets
This class will be going on all day long, and there will be many different puppets to make. Scarf marionettes, worm puppets, sock puppets, paper bag puppets, lots of ideas & many to make & take. Pop in when you have a few minutes to make a simple puppet.

Voice & Movement of Your Puppet
How to make your puppet come alive & look convincing. This will be done with a stage & mirrors on the wall to be able to see your actions.

Mechanical Controls (demo)
How to really make the puppet come alive, move the eyes, ears, oh it’s all so clever. Joe works for a robotic company & has so many ways to make the puppet come alive.
